Writing Gurbani on Ordinary Paper: A Sacred Practice That Deserves Better Materials
Before You Begin Writing Gurbani, Learn How to Preserve It
Across the world, thousands of Sikhs engage in the beautiful practice of writing Gurbani by hand. For many, this is a form of meditation, devotion, and sewa. Each word written becomes an opportunity to connect with the wisdom of the Gurus and cultivate spiritual discipline.
However, there is an important question that is rarely asked:
Will the Gurbani you write today still be readable 50, 100, or 200 years from now?
Most people begin writing Gurbani using ordinary diaries, school notebooks, office paper, and inexpensive ballpoint pens. While the intention is sincere and admirable, the materials often lack the quality required for long-term preservation.
As an Art Conservator, I regularly study the deterioration of manuscripts, documents, books, and heritage objects. The reality is that many modern papers and pens are not designed to preserve important writings for future generations.
If we truly respect Gurbani, we should also respect the materials on which it is written.
Gurbani Is Sacred—But Is Your Paper Permanent?
Many commercially available notebooks are manufactured for short-term use.
Their purpose is to record temporary information such as notes, reminders, calculations, and daily records. They are not designed to preserve sacred writings for generations.
Most inexpensive diary papers contain:
• Wood pulp
• High lignin content
• Acidic compounds
• Low-quality fillers
These materials gradually deteriorate over time.
Unfortunately, many people dedicate months or even years to writing Gurbani without ever learning how paper ages and why manuscripts deteriorate.
This is one of the reasons I encourage students to first learn the fundamentals of Archival Calligraphy before beginning major Gurbani writing projects.
A small investment in knowledge can protect years of devotion.
The Science of Paper Deterioration
To understand why ordinary paper is problematic, we must first understand lignin.
Lignin is a natural polymer found in wood. It gives trees their strength and rigidity.
When lignin-containing paper is exposed to:
• Oxygen
• Sunlight
• Heat
• Humidity
chemical reactions begin to occur.
These reactions produce acidic compounds that attack the cellulose fibers within the paper.
Conservators refer to this process as acid hydrolysis.
As acid hydrolysis progresses, paper experiences:
• Yellowing
• Brittleness
• Loss of strength
• Cracking at folds
• Fragmentation of edges
This is why many old newspapers become yellow and fragile after only a few decades.
The same process occurs in many ordinary notebooks used for writing Gurbani.
Why Devotion Alone Cannot Stop Deterioration
Many people believe that careful handling alone will preserve their handwritten Gurbani.
Unfortunately, deterioration is often occurring at a microscopic level inside the paper itself.
Even if a notebook remains untouched on a shelf, acids continue to break down the paper fibers year after year.
The spiritual value of the writing remains eternal.
The physical object does not.
Conservation science teaches us that preservation requires both devotion and knowledge.
The Hidden Problems with Ordinary Pens
The paper is only half the story.
The pen matters as well.
Many inexpensive ballpoint pens contain dye-based inks designed primarily for affordability and convenience.
These inks may suffer from:
Fading
Ultraviolet light can gradually reduce ink visibility.
Color Changes
Black inks may become brownish or grey over time.
Chemical Instability
Certain dyes degrade as they age.
Uneven Legibility
Some parts of the text fade faster than others.
As conservators, we frequently encounter manuscripts where the paper survives but the writing becomes difficult to read because the ink has deteriorated.
When writing sacred texts, permanence should be a consideration from the very beginning.
Calligraphy Is Not the Same as Archival Calligraphy
Many people assume that calligraphy simply means beautiful handwriting.
In reality, there is a significant difference between ordinary calligraphy and archival calligraphy.
Traditional calligraphy focuses primarily on aesthetics.
Archival calligraphy combines:
• Beautiful writing
• Conservation science
• Paper chemistry
• Ink permanence
• Manuscript construction
• Preservation methods
The objective is not only to create beautiful pages but to create manuscripts capable of surviving for generations.
When writing Gurbani, preservation should be considered part of the seva itself.
Learning Before Writing
Imagine spending three years writing Gurbani by hand.
Now imagine discovering decades later that the paper has become yellow, brittle, and fragile because inappropriate materials were used.
Unfortunately, conservators encounter such situations regularly.
This is why I encourage aspiring scribes, calligraphers, and Gurbani writers to first understand:
• Archival papers
• Permanent inks
• Manuscript design
• Preventive conservation
• Environmental storage
Before beginning any large writing project.
Knowledge gained before writing can save years of effort afterward.
What Materials Should Be Used Instead?
For long-term preservation, consider using:
Archival Paper
Choose paper that is:
• Acid-free
• Lignin-free
• pH neutral or alkaline buffered
• Archival quality
Such papers resist yellowing and deterioration far better than ordinary notebook paper.
Permanent Inks
Choose inks that are:
• Pigment-based
• Lightfast
• Waterproof
• Archival grade
These inks generally provide superior longevity compared to inexpensive ballpoint inks.
Proper Storage
Store manuscripts:
• Away from direct sunlight
• In stable temperature conditions
• In moderate humidity
• Inside archival-quality enclosures
Good storage is as important as good materials.

On the contrary, I encourage every sincere seeker to engage deeply with Gurbani through reading, recitation, study, and writing.
However, before dedicating months or years to the creation of a handwritten Gurbani manuscript, take time to learn about the materials you are using.
Understand how paper ages.
Understand how ink deteriorates.
Understand how manuscripts survive.
When devotion is combined with conservation knowledge, the result is not merely a handwritten notebook—it becomes a lasting heritage object.
Learn first. Write once. Preserve for generations.
